NFA's 2017 Class Night took place 6 p.m., June 14, in Alumni Gymnasium. It was the final award program of the season that began April 28, 2017, with the opening of the 127th Student Art Exhibition and Awards Ceremony, followed by Athletic Awards Ceremony, June 7, 2017.
In total, 325 students received 360 academic, athletic, and art awards amounting to over $390, 970 from funds stewarded by the NFA Foundation, Inc., and generously provided by Norwich Free Academy's alumni and friends. This figure does not include any governmental, corporate, or institutional financial aid or scholarships students receive separate from those provided by the NFA Foundation, Inc. The Foundation exists to advance the educational opportunities available at Norwich Free Academy, including the oversight and stewardship of the many scholarship funds that benefit the Academy's students.
In addition, nine members of the class of 2016 will continue to receive support per donor intent that include multi-year scholarship provisions.
The program, streamed live on NFA-TV and YouTube, featured music by the Jazz Ensemble and NFA Ambassadors. NFA Alumni Association President Leslie Lane Christie '82, welcomed, and Sarah Burchman '94, 2016 Teacher of the Year, spoke to the gymnasium filled with recipients, families, friends, faculty, and staff.
Senior Class President Logan Gooden delivered the traditional Passage Speech. He told his classmates, "Be a leader or a follower; work singularly or work together – whatever role you take or how you take it -- ensure your changes make this world a better place. It's our obligation as educated individuals to make or create changes for the better. We have the tools that this amazing school has given us -- education, resources, new, fresh ideas, staggering technology, self-confidence, lasting friendships, and, most importantly, a home here at NFA."
Shattuck House Principal Kristin Peckrul and Director of Communications and Public Affairs Geoff Serra announced winners as Head of School David Klein congratulated students and posed with them for pictures.
