Our Wildcat Promise

In an 1886 Norwich Bulletin article celebrating the recent opening of the Slater Memorial Museum, a commemorative note was made recounting the visionary agreement between Reverend John Putnam Gulliver and 35 community leaders to found Norwich Free Academy.  Responding to Gulliver’s revolutionary intention to independently design and build the school, the Bulletin famously labeled it a “Wildcat Scheme” of an idea.

Today, 170 years since inception, what was once a courageous scheme is now a legacy of educational excellence, confirmed by a vast and successful alumni group spanning the globe.  Graduates of NFA are teachers, military heroes, artists, designers, musicians, writers of renown, scholars, scientists, inventors, political leaders and ambassadors. Today, what was once a “Wildcat Scheme,” now dares us to consider a future as bright and hopeful as our origin story.  As we look ahead to the years 2025-2030, our founder's spirit calls us to again coolly face the challenges we know while breathing life into the opportunities we can create.

The statements below summarize the insights and reflections of the Wildcat Community that were collected via focus groups and surveys conducted throughout the spring of 2024. In these sessions, we asked three simple questions. What is our strength as a school? What are our needs? What is a priority for you? As we listened to the stories, memories, hopes and dreams of our students, faculty, staff, corporators, trustees, parents, partner district leaders and community members, their message was overwhelmingly aspirational and direct.

In response, we offer this vision for the next five years as a promise to our students for the work they can expect to see, be a part of and benefit from. We will build on our strengths, seek to address our needs and continually evolve to meet the ever changing needs of our students. In Our Wildcat Promise, we hope you find the same encouragement and responsibility we feel as we carry forward the mission of our beloved school.

This is Our Wildcat Promise.
