Murphy named as girls' basketball coach

NFA Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Wes Murphy

Wes Murphy has been named the girls’ basketball coach at Norwich Free Academy.

“Wes knows our program, and he knows our kids,” said Athletic Director Roy Wentworth. “He has been an integral part of multiple teams in the past, and this is his opportunity to take the reins of a program and build on its recent success.”

A 2009 graduate of the Academy, Murphy is currently serving as an assistant coach of the girls’ volleyball team. He has served as the head coach of the boys’ volleyball team, too. For seven years, Murphy served as an assistant boys’ basketball coach, including two years leading the junior varsity program. He also served for five seasons as the head freshman coach. He was also the head coach at Teachers Memorial Middle School.

“This is an incredible opportunity,” said Murphy. “Girls’ basketball has a history of success at NFA, and I am focused on continuing that tradition. We will continue to play a challenging schedule and expect to compete at both the conference and state level. I’m fortunate to know many of the players in the program, and I look forward to getting to work soon and continue the tradition of successful girls’ basketball at NFA.”

Murphy, who received his bachelor’s degree from Husson University, replaces Courtney Gomez who took a position as the top assistant coach at Central Connecticut State University.
