Wentworth retiring as athletic director, Guisti named successor

Chris Guisti

Chris Guisti has been named the Athletic Director at Norwich Free Academy, effective February 1, 2026. He will succeed Roy Wentworth, who will retire January 31, 2026, after 24 years of service to the Academy, including eight as the AD.

“Roy Wentworth is a man of great character and heart,” said Head of School Dr. Nathan Quesnel. “When he became AD in 2018, he was the right man at the right time to steady the ship. He poured himself into the job and modeled consistency, faithfulness and accountability. Roy has quiet integrity, steady professionalism and an immense love for NFA. He informed me of his milestone decision over the summer, but asked that it remain private so work could continue without distraction as we moved through this important process.”

Guisti, who is currently the Head of the Special Education Department, emerged from an intense selection process that included nearly 30 highly qualified candidates. Quesnel said Guisti, a valued member of the NFA community for 25 years, is ready for the challenge.

“Chris has a clear and inspiring vision for the future of NFA athletics,” Quesnel said. “He knows NFA. He respects our traditions, values our past and is deeply invested in our future. His strong relationships with students, athletes, alumni and community members provide an exceptional foundation for success as he takes this next step in leadership.”

“I am honored,” said Guisti. “To have this role, at this place, there’s no better job for me than this. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to carrying on Roy’s work as our school continues to evolve.

“Athletics plays an integral part in the recruitment and retention of students,” continued Guisti. “I know we can succeed, and I know that success will bring more students to NFA. In addition to that, this position must be an exemplary model and resources for our coaches and support staff. My approach will foster growth, self-reflection, supportive dialogue and a commitment to success.”

Guisti was the head boys’ basketball coach at NFA for eight years, earning three ECC tournament titles in that time. Two of those conference titles came during the pandemic. During the first of those two title seasons, the Wildcats were 23-0, ranked #2 in Connecticut (the highest in school history) and primed for the state tournament when the season was canceled. NFA won the ECC the following year, too, and there was no state tournament that year either. Prior to being named head coach, he served as an assistant for 13 years. He also has coached various AAU, youth and middle school programs.

After working one year in Bridgeport, Guisti joined the faculty at NFA in 2000. He taught for 22 years before being named the department head in 2022.

Guisti earned his bachelor’s degree at Syracuse University. He completed his master’s degree at Southern Connecticut State University and his 092 and sixth year degree at Sacred Heart University.
