New softball, boys volleyball coaches named

Athena Jaskiewicz and Tim Strong have joined the coaching ranks at Norwich Free Academy. Jaskiewicz will lead the softball program, and Strong will lead the boys’ volleyball team.

“Athena and Tim are great additions to our athletic program,” said NFA Athletic Director Roy Wentworth. “Their connection to our school community and passion for teaching kids is outstanding. I look forward to their work with our student-athletes.”

Jaskiewicz, who takes over the softball program from Bryan Burdick, is currently a health and physical education teacher at NFA. A 2010 NFA graduate, Jaskiewicz is the assistant girls volleyball coach, and she was the assistant softball coach at St. Bernard High School for three years.

“I’m excited to build on the foundation established by Coach Burdick,” said Jaskiewicz. “Our kids are ready to get started, and I’m looking forward to a great season on the field.”

Strong takes over the boys volleyball program from Wes Murphy. Currently the boys basketball coach at Montville High School, Strong has also coached at Ledyard High School (cross country and track), the Integrated Day Charter School and with local AAU programs.

Strong is familiar with the program and students at NFA through his work during the past two years of recognizing seniors at high schools throughout the area during the trying times of the pandemic.

“I am thrilled to join NFA and lead this program,” said Strong. “I’ve become familiar with the school and the students, and I look forward to taking on this challenge. I can’t wait to get started!”
