NFA hosts annual spelling bee
Norwich, CT (November 19, 2019) – More than 30 Norwich Free Academy students will participate in
the 37th annual Lillian S. Young Spelling Bee Monday, November 25, at 6 pm in Slater Auditorium.
English teacher Katrina McKelvin will serve as moderator. Judges include DeVol Joyner, chair of the
NFA Board of Trustees; Linda Lamothe, retired English teacher; and Catherine Dowler, principal of
Fields Memorial School.

Killeen Dziavit ’97 is the head of the NFA English Department, and the event committee includes
McKelvin, Kim Roberts and Ashley Cholewa ’13.

This unique event, which began in 1982, was established by a bequest of Winfred Charles Young,
NFA Class of 1909, in memory of his mother, Lillian S. Young.

Participating students compete by grade level and the four winners receive a cash award from the
NFA Foundation during class night ceremonies in the spring.

The event is free and open to the public.
