Three students named MLK scholars

Three members of the Norwich Free Academy Class of 2021 have been awarded scholarships by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Trust Fund.

Ann Barbot, Makayla Kelley and Valeria Yraita-Zevallos were all surprised on campus this week during virtual meetings with James Mitchell, Ph.D., the president of the MLK Trust Fund Board of Trustees. Also participating in the meetings was NFA Head of School Dr. Brian M. Kelly, Tirrell House Principal Ross Sward and each student’s guidance counselor.

The students will each receive $20,000 paid out equally over four years.

This year’s recipients will be honored during a virtual ceremony Thursday, October 22, at 6 pm. The philanthropy of individuals and organizations in southeastern Connecticut supports the fund, which operates with virtually no overhead, ensuring that contributions directly support recipients.
