Junior Allyson Lewis won the girls high jump at Saturday’s CIAC State Open Championships in New Haven, CT. She is NFA’s first State Open individual champion since Allison Sullivan ’12 won the pole vault in 2011. Lewis, who won the Class LL title last weekend, jumped five feet, six inches for the second consecutive week.
Junior Jahiem Spruill finished third in the boys’ high jump and sixth in the boys long jump with jumps of six feet and twenty feet, ten and one-half inches respectively. He is NFA’s first male athlete to qualify for the New England Championships in two individual events since Mike Elliot ’06 reached New England’s in the high and long jumps during the 2006 indoor track season.
Senior Chris Weir and sophomore Paige Martin also scored points for the Wildcats. Weir and Martin each finished fourth in the pole vault. Weir jumped thirteen feet, while Martin jumped ten feet, six inches.
The boys team scored eight points to finish in nineteenth place, while the girls team scored fourteen points to finish in twelfth. Both boys and girls posted their best team scores since 2013.
Next, Lewis and Spruill will compete Saturday, March 3, at the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center, Boston, MA.
