A Message from the Head of School
Classes at Norwich Free Academy are cancelled for a minimum of two weeks effective Monday, March 16. In addition, any activities scheduled at the Academy this weekend have been cancelled.
This decision, which was not made lightly, was made in conjunction with the Uncas Health District, our School Medical Advisor and neighboring school districts. This decision puts the health of our community at the center of this decision to close school. We have been advised that the implementation of social distancing measures is a proven science-based intervention that has been shown to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with communicable disease outbreaks. In the past, communities in which schools closed were able to positively impact and reduce the spread of disease. We felt compelled to make this decision to prevent the spread of illness among our students and community.
There has been much discussion about the concept of distance learning during prolonged absences. At this time, the Connecticut State Department of Education has discouraged schools from utilizing this approach due to concerns over instructional consistency, equity of access, disruption of special education and more.
The most certain element of this situation is its uncertainty. I will continue to provide updates as appropriate when new information is available. These updates will utilize any combination of SchoolMessenger, email, social media and on the school website at nfaschool.org/covid19.
Thank you for your understanding and support during this unprecedented time. David J.
