End of year activities

As we move into our fourth marking period, there is no question many of you are wondering how our traditional end of the year activities will take place as we celebrate the achievement of all of our students, but particularly the Class of 2021. Our team has been monitoring all current federal and state guidelines and working diligently to develop a plan that follows those guidelines while balancing the ability to celebrate and acknowledge our students as much as possible in this challenging time.

Today, I’m focused on informing you about our four traditional end-of-year events:
  • Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2021
  • Class Night and Awards Ceremony
  • Champions Night (Athletic Awards and Prizes)
  • Visual and Performing Arts Awards
Commencement Exercises - Wednesday, June 9, 4 pm

Based on current guidelines, we are not able to host an outdoor graduation on our Turf Field to incorporate proper social distancing. Therefore, our number one priority has been ensuring we can provide the Class of 2021 with a fitting send off, and I am pleased to announce that graduation will take place outside and in-person at Dodd Stadium, a location which allows us to maintain all current safety protocols and provide the same number of attendees as an on-campus graduation. We are planning an on-field event, and each student will receive four admission tickets. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will revert to the parking lot like last year, with additional adjustments. Specific information about each scenario will be released as the date draws near. The event will also be live-streamed for viewing by anyone not onsite.

And, in keeping with tradition, members of the Class of 1971, our 50th reunion class, will be invited to participate in the outdoor ceremony. Our Foundation team will communicate directly with members of the class on details as they develop.

Annual Award Ceremonies

With a continued focus on safety and all current guidelines, which do not allow for large indoor gatherings, our three annual award ceremonies will be held virtually this year. Like last year, these ceremonies will include all traditional elements and be broadcast at their original time on the Academy YouTube Channel, which provides access to anyone anywhere and at any time. Dates and times for these events are as follows:

Class Night and Awards Ceremony - Tuesday, June 8, 6 pm

Champions Night (Athletic Awards and Prizes) - Monday, June 7, 6 pm

Visual and Performing Arts Awards - Thursday, June 3, 6 pm

Additional Information

More information about these and other events will be coming in the future. We do have a team planning some traditional senior events (such as prom, breakfast and senior day), and that process is underway. However, we also anticipate further guidance from the state on some of those activities and will share more information when it’s appropriate. It’s also important to realize that should any guidelines change, plans will be adjusted accordingly.

However, with students returning to campus more frequently beginning April 19, and a thoughtful and safe approach to our end-of-the-year events, I am optimistic about providing our students -- and especially our seniors -- with an opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated.

Thank you, as always, for your continued patience and support during this time.

Dr. Brian M. Kelly
Superintendent/Head of School
