NFA Community Update - May 5

Dear Friends,

Greetings from NFA. With the news from Hartford earlier today that Governor Lamont has cancelled in-person classes for the remainder of this academic year, I want to take a moment and update you on how this directly impacts Norwich Free Academy moving forward.

Remote Learning Continues
All elements of our Continuity of Learning Plan (CLP) for remote learning will continue through the remainder of the academic year. Faculty will continue to post assignments, provide live and/or pre-recorded lessons and work with students as they have been during this mandated closure process.

School Ending Dates
The last day for our senior class remains Thursday, June 11, and the final day for all others (Grades 9-11) remains Monday, June 15.

Free Meals Continue
Our grab-and-go meals program will continue to be available through the remainder of the academic year. Meals, which are available to anyone at no cost, remain available for pick up between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm each day outside of the Tirrell Building. Each meal includes lunch and a breakfast for the next day. On Fridays, meals are also provided for the weekend.

Spring Sports and Prom
Regretfully, the Governor’s announcement provides final direction on the cancellation of the spring sports season as well as the junior and senior proms.

Awards and Recognition Events
Despite the many societal challenges and disappointment we face through this national health and safety crisis, the Academy is committed to honoring and recognizing the outstanding work and achievement of our students, especially our seniors, the NFA Class of 2020.  We will do this by producing and broadcasting virtual ceremonial events according to the following schedule:

  • Monday, June 8, 6 pm – Annual Visual and Performing Art Awards
  • Tuesday, June 9, 6 pm – Norwich Free Academy Champions Night
  • Wednesday, June 10, 6 pm – Class Night and Awards Ceremony
  • Thursday, June 11, 4 pm – Commencement Exercises – Class of 2020

These virtual programs will be available in the following manner:

Comcast Cable (Norwich/Old Lyme): NFA-TV, Channel 12
Frontier Communications: NFA-TV, Ch. 99 (Educational Access 1)

More specifics about each program will be provided to you as the broadcast dates draw near.

Summer School and Summer Programming
The Governor has not yet provided specific guidance as it pertains to summer school activities, as well as traditional summer enrichment programs offered at Norwich Free Academy. We will provide further information about the delivery system of our summer Credit Recovery Program when more guidance has been provided by the Governor.

Next Steps
As you know, these continue to be incredibly challenging and frustrating times for everyone – students, families, faculty and staff. I am grateful for the collective effort, support and understanding of the NFA Community as we navigate this new approach to daily life and education.

Class of 2020
To our seniors, the NFA Class of 2020, please know that in addition to the virtual award and recognition events listed here, a committed and forward thinking team is working diligently to create opportunities to properly honor you. While we can never replace what would have been, we are dedicated to celebrating you and your precious time at NFA in the best and most practical ways possible given the circumstances. Additional information about those plans will be forthcoming.

I continue to wish and pray for good health for all members of the NFA community and thank you for your support during this challenging time.
